Canadian company’s new device makes Pokmon Go accessible to wheelchair usersToronto based company Komodo OpenLab thought of a way to make it easier to play Pokmon Go on tablets and smartphones for users who might not be able to interact with these gadgets (people who have multiple sclerosis, are wheelchair bound or have spinal injuries), by using its assistive hardware product called, Tecla in iOS Switch Control in “Point Mode”. Industrial Designer at Komodo, Larry Kwok displayed the ability to control the game using Tecla with the help of local pokmon savvy friends (both on an electric wheelchair) on the streets of Toronto. The Tecla controlled was installed on their wheelchairs and allowed for control of the game via Bluetooth. A control unit switched the target device for the hardware controller between the smartphone and the wheelchair, which also works with single or dual switches.

"We've had great success with students on the autism spectrum with the Titans of Space program using Oculus Rift [a virtual-reality headset]. The students virtually travel around the entire solar system, learning about each planet as they visit them." Advertisement Students also upload their more artistic photos to a virtual art gallery. "They take turns 'walking' through the art gallery to see their work," Mr Nolan says. Video is an old technology, but it is being used as a tool to teach special-needs students a behaviour or skill, says Shane Spence, who ran a session on Video Self Modelling. He is the director of meTV Education at Yarra Ranges Special Developmental School in Mount Evelyn, and streaming Australia-wide. The idea is to show a child a two-minute or less video of themselves performing a skill they cannot currently perform. "The learning is much more powerful when it's yourself that you are watching and imitating," says Anthea Naylor, a special education teacher at Yarra Ranges. For example, she slowed down footage of a child mumbling "I want a drink" to show him that talking more slowly meant people could understand him. "Then he gets a drink on the video. By the end of that day, he made 30 clear 'I want ...' type requests." For students with speaking difficulties, a communication app worth mentioning is Proloquo2Go, which has thousands of symbols that students use to create sentences that are spoken aloud. Switches and smartpens Switches, typically attached to the head or a hand, are another useful technology that helps students with physical impairments access devices and apps, including tablets, interactive whiteboards, and ebooks. Students can control wireless or Bluetooth-enabled switches with simple motions, including head movements, voice activation, and controlled breathing. Other assistive hardware includes smartpens such as Livescribe and Echo that record lessons for students who have memory or note-taking problems. When reviewing their notes, students can tap anywhere on their written notes and the corresponding audio is replayed. Anxiety is reduced as students can relisten to the class, picking up things they have missed due to say dyslexia or attention deficit disorder. Social inclusion Teachers are creating their own, individually tailored learning resources, using iBooks Author to create multi-touch textbooks for their classrooms, and iTunes U to craft their own curriculum sequences that they use in class, says Craig Smith, education consultant for Autism Spectrum Australia. However, he says one of the most crucial aspects of assistive technology is the potential to allow special needs students to participate in mainstream life. Consider a high school student on the autism spectrum catching the bus to a work placement, he says. People are using their mobile devices to play games, message and check emails. The autistic student also has a mobile device, checking the daily timetable, reading a social story in iBooks that has been created to help them self-regulate before meeting the staff with whom they'll be working The student also has headphones to listen to a guided meditation app to help them focus and settle down before they alight from the bus, Mr Smith says. "It was not too long ago that this student would have been using visual supports and folders of social stories that were very different to the lifestyle resources being used by the other bus passengers. "They are using the exact same technology that everybody else on the bus is using. This is something in special education that we have never before been able to achieve in such a fluently inclusive manner. This is very, very exciting." Which technology? Despite all the technology, if it does not suit the student, it is likely to be abandoned, says associate professor Dr Dianne Chambers, from the University of Notre Dame Australia in Perth.
